Pestered By Ants
Texas is home to some fearsome ants and some that are so small you can hardly see them. Inside we explore several species of ants that might be pestering you.
- Crazy Ants – Imported from South America, crazy ants are just that – crazy. Oddly, a colony of crazy ants will wipe out a colony of fire ants, so they cannot be all bad. However, these ants love snacky foods with craving for sugar and carbs. This makes them a prime target for kitchens and pantries.
- Fire Ants – aptly named because their sting makes you feel as though you are burning. These too are invasive ants from South America and they have taken a firm hold in Texas. The best time to destroy fire ant colonies is in early spring or late winter when the new colonies are just beginning to build their mound. Ants are cousins of wasps and bees and they sting as well as bite. Fire ants will make their way into your home for food and water.
- Pharaoh Ants – these are small ants that are attracted to protein or carbs and sometimes both. This makes them a prime candidate for yards and homes. If you have small ants in your kitchen or home, it is very likely the pharaoh ant. Very invasive, and pest-like.
- Carpenter Ants – Large ants aptly named because they chew into wood to make galleries for nesting. In a home, these ants are almost as destructive as termites. Unlike Termites they do not eat the wood, just tunnel into beams and foundation supports to make a home.
