How To Check For Bed Bugs

Check for Bites
Bed bug bites can mimic mosquito bites, especially if you are sensitive to the anticoagulant that they use to keep your blood flowing. Bed bugs feed on human blood. If you have bites that are unexplained and that are about the size of a #2 pencil eraser, then you might have bed bugs.
Check the Beds
Bed bugs get their name because they bite you while you are sleeping. These are nocturnal bugs, so they hide during the day. Bed bugs are very small, about the size of an uncooked grain of rice. Most are light brown, but if they have fed recently, they might be reddish brown.
- Examine the bed’s sheets for small blood stains. These will likely be about the size of a pencil tip or less than the size of a dime. If you see these, then there are likely bed bugs.
- Pull back the sheet and examine the mattress pad. Look for small grains of maroon colored balls. This is bed bug poop, and it is your digested blood. If it is present, it will likely be in the small divots of the mattress pad and its design.
- Look for actual bed bugs. They tend to burrow into crevices. Pull back the mattress pad and look around the rim of the mattress, in its design, between the mattress and the foundation, and the frame. Bed bugs hide when it is light out and come out when its dark.
