Do DIY Pest Control Products Work?
The simple answer is that it depends on the product. Some do a good job, and others only kill a few of the target species. Here is a close look at why some DIY pest control products fail.
The Product Does Not Address The Habits of the Pest
An excellent example might be ant traps. Maybe you see ants around your kitchen and set out a few ant traps. For a week or so, you might not see any ants. Then one morning, they are back. The ant trap is likely killing them, but it is not solving the problem. The problem is that there is a colony of ants out there, and it keeps sending foragers to look for food in your home.
So, here’s a little fact about ants. They use chemicals to make a trail. When they die, they have left a chemical map that leads to your kitchen. The next set of foraging ants follows the dots to your kitchen, and BOOM, the ants are back. That process repeats until there is a swarm of ants.
The Habits of the Pest
Social insects, including termites, ants, wasps, and bees, all have very similar habits. They form colonies; workers are born into a role, there is a queen and sometimes a King. All of these insects search for food and bring it back to the colony. If they do not come back, older workers replace them. Unless your DIY products’ design is to take out the colony, the ants will continue to forage into your kitchen.
