It seems that no sooner has winter begun to fade then flying pests show up by the droves. One of the biggest flying pests around is actually a delicate little flyer – The mosquito. So, what else might do fly-bys and pester you t his coming summer? This blog looks at a few of the flying pests that pester homeowners around the Bryan and College Station communities.
- Biting Flies – There are a few species of biting flies in the local community. Most of us are “very” familiar with the stinging bite of the black fly but we have plenty of deer fly and horse fly around the area. Any one of these brilliant-eyed females will bite and you will soon not forget the encounter either. Biting flies can transmit anthrax if they have previously bitten an infected grazer – cattle, deer, etc. Expect biting flies to show up anytime after May.
- Big Wasps – Yellowjackets and hornets are already starting to emerge, and they will soon be pestering everyone. We also have plenty of big social wasps that look like trouble, but rarely bug anyone. These are the solitary wasps that hunt spiders.
- Sweat Bees – No sooner does the weather turn warm then we have sweat bees. These little bees feed on the salts in our sweat and occasionally sting us. After the wet spring, there will be plenty of sweat around as people try to get their yards back into shape. That is the perfect environment for sweat bees.
- Houseflies – Nasty, big, and obnoxious, house flies are everywhere – home, restaurants, the gym, the park, everywhere there might be something rotten to eat.
