3 Summer Pests You’re Likely Dealing With Now
It’s not even summer yet and many Bryan and College Station property and business owners are knee deep in pest problems. This blog looks at three of the most common summer pests and gives a little advice on how to control them now.
- Wasps – There are many types of wasps around Bryan and College Station. Not all are a problem. The most obnoxious are the social wasp – yellowjackets, paper wasps, hornets, etc. Some of those that are not a real concern are the many types of solitary wasps such as mud daubers. The solitary wasps provide a service as most hunt and subdue spiders such as the black widow. These are non-aggressive wasps and do not really need controlling. The social wasps on the other hand are an issue and can impact how we enjoy the outdoors, cause problems with pets, and invade our social activities.
- The Mosquito – As if there is only one – The sad fact is that we have a few species of mosquito around Bryan and some of those can be dangerous. Mosquitoes spread disease and a single bite can transmit West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever, and in some parts of the world, Malaria. Even a bite from a non-infected mosquito can itch and be a cause of a secondary infection. Nothing reminds us of how a small thing can have a big impact on us as when we are trying to sleep with a mosquito in the room. Home and business mosquito control is affordable and effective. - #3 is really a tossup this year. 2019 is proving to a bad year for snakes. The early spring has them out in droves as the rodent populations have exploded and the snakes have come to feast. This is more of an issue if you live near water or are rural, but even in the city you can find snakes. Texas is home to many kinds of snakes and not all of them are venomous. Only a handful are dangerous. 2019 is also a bumper year for mammal pests from raccoon to possum to skunks. Sadly, the rodent issue has never gone away. The milder winter, early spring means more rodents in your house, around your yard or pestering your business.
Even though summer is still some weeks and months away, there is still time to control pests. Summer is by far the worst time for pests as more types of pests are present. Those include birds, feral animals, wild animals, insects, rodents, and snakes. Even the scorpions thrive during the heat of summer.
