July Pest Outlook for Bryan, Texas
The ongoing drought-like conditions around Eastern Texas means many animals, insects, and other pests will risk coming nearer to homes in search of water. Insects have specialized cells in their antenna that allow them to find water.
Expect to see an increase in pests this summer and fall.
Increase in Rodents
Rodents – Mice and rats are the first to take advantage of the water around and inside of homes. Expect an increase in rodent pest situations in and around your home. Food is another issue as there is less water in the natural areas; food becomes scarce. Rats and mice will look for food in homes, garbage cans, and other places around your home.
More Insect Pests
Summer is already the peak of insect pests, and when there are fewer resources around insects, take advantage of food and water found in homes and businesses. Expect more ant invasions from many species of ants. They will come to find water and food. Expect roaming insect pests such as cockroaches and silverfish. Expect a lot of issues with flies – house flies, flesh flies, biting flies, drain flies, gnats, and fruit flies. Outdoors expect wasp colonies such as yellowjacket nests and issues with pets and wasp as wasps try to steal food.
Encounters with Wildlife
Mammal and Rodents will both be looking for food and water. Expect more incidents with raccoons, skunks, possum, coyote, and potentially even Mountain Lions. A good plan is to keep pet food indoors so that the presence of pet food does not attract wildlife.
