Two Reasons To Call Us For Rodent Control
Rodents Spread Disease
The most important thing that you need to know when faced with a potential rodent infestation is this; rodents spread disease. Mice, rats, and other rodents can carry a whole range of different types of diseases. Some of those diseases include:
- Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
- Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome
- Lassa Fever
- Leptospirosis
- Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM)
- Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever
- Plague
- Rat-Bite Fever
- Salmonellosis
- South American Arenaviruses (Argentine hemorrhagic fever, Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, Sabiá-associated hemorrhagic fever, Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever)
- Tularemia

How Rodents Spread Disease
So, how do you catch Lassa Fever from a rat? You can catch a rat disease in a variety of ways. Direct contact with a rodent’s excrement is one way. Of course, if you can see rat poop you’re probably not going to grab it, right? Did you know that breathing in the aerosolized particles while sweeping rat feces is enough contact to successfully contract a disease?
Additional ways to contract a rat-born disease include, but are not limited to;
- handling / inhaling microorganism particles aerosolized from hay, woodpiles, or other materials contaminated with infectious rodent urine;
- handling of infected rodents;
- bites from rodents — microorganisms carried in saliva can infect both humans and other rodents;
- scratches from rodents;
- drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food; (eg, a box of cereal you didn’t know they got into!)
- rodents acting as sources for infecting ectoparasites (ticks, fleas, mites, lice) with various pathogens;
- dogs, cats and foxes (especially urban) eating rodents and then catching parasites such as tapeworms that can be passed on to humans by them; and
- rodents can also act as reservoirs for various flying-insect-borne diseases.

Rodents Reproduce Quickly
Furthermore, rodents reproduce extraordinarily quickly. Mice gestation lasts 19-21 days and females typically give birth to anywhere from 3 to 14 babies. At 5-10 litters per year, mice reproduce at some of the highest mammalian reproduction rates. What does this mean for you? It means that the scurrying sound you hear in the attic can go from one little mouse to over a dozen in less than three weeks.
