October Pest Outlook for Bryan, Texas
October is an active month for most pests. The weather begins to cool and the overwintering stage begins. What does that mean for homeowners and businesses in Bryan and College Station? It means more indoor pests.
By October the rodents are settling down for winter. Squirrels are building nests and digging burrows. Keep a close eye on your roof and eaves as squirrels prefer the warm indoor attic space to a lofty tree nest. Ground squirrels remain a concern and both tree and ground squirrels are still actively scavenging nuts, seeds, and acorns. Fall is a prime time for garden damage as both will help themselves to fruit and veggies.
The mice and rats are also moving indoors. If you see signs of rodents in your home, act quickly. Most of the females are expecting and it will not take long for a small infestation of mice to overrun your home. Rats and roof rats make their presence known with their loud running across the subflooring. Be sure to check the attic for signs of rats and mice. While you are up there, look for bats too.
The wasps are winding down from a very busy summer. Be cautious in quiet spaces in your yard as in-ground nests are still very active. It will take a while yet for the social wasps to die off. In the meantime, they are still actively hunting for food.
Wolf spiders and long-legged cellar spiders are almost a constant indoor pest problem. During October you may find black widow and brown recluse spiders looking for warmer shelter. That means check clothing and boxes before you pick up either.
By now, this spring’s crop of baby animals are maturing enough to venture out on their own. Be on the lookout for smaller animals, such as raccoons and skunks. Raccoons and possum are likely looking for winter shelter and outbuildings, garages, and open vents to the foundation area of your home are all prime targets.
The good news is that the fly populations are starting to decrease, but the mosquitoes may be as annoying as ever.
