Pests that Like it Damp
There are a handful of pests that we often see. They live around most yards, in homes, and under houses. These are usually insects that consume deadwood. Dampwood termites would be a good example. Generally, we don’t find damp wood termites around homes unless the home has had severe water damage. Here’s our list of common pests that like damp conditions
Sowbugs
Oddly sowbugs are not bugs at all; they are crustaceans. That’s right, some distant relative crabs and lobsters. The most common places to find sowbugs are in a leaky basement, in a bathroom that has water damage, or in a kitchen where the sink is leaking or caused water damage.
Sowbugs only eat decaying vegetation or wood. They did not cause the damage you see but are helping to clean it up. Sowbugs are an indicator species that tells you there is or soon will be water and wood damage.
Earwigs
Pincher Bugs or aka the earwig they love damp conditions. They are an insect that loves to eat decaying vegetation, seedlings, and young plants. You often find these in the garden, under pots, or lawn rubbish heaps. You will also find them in leaky basements, wet bathrooms, and under cupboards in the kitchen. These, too, are an indicator species that water damage or wood damage is occurring.
Slugs
Snails and slugs also love damp conditions. You may find slugs in the house where water damage has occurred. It is not often that you find snails in the house. They will, however, live behind plants and on your home. Slugs and snails are more of a garden or yard issue. You can get rid of both by keeping the garden clean of leaf litter and objects.
