The month of August is one of the most significant months of the year for many pest control issues. By now, most species of pests have larger populations, which in the predator/prey world means more and more available resources. Homeowner sightings of predatory pests such as snakes, wildlife with babies, and huge populations of insects go up.

Housefly & Biting Fly Populations Swell
The good news is that we are nearing the end of the season for the bigger biting flies such as deer fly and horse fly. What remains are the smaller species such as the black biting fly. There is also a more significant presence of fruit flies and drain flies.
Ants – Indoors and Out
The number of ant species and the size of their colonies is mind-boggling in the summer. Fire ants, crazy ants, pharaoh ants, Argentine ants, harvester ants … the list keeps going. They are all out and abundant and most are frantically scavenging for food to sustain the colony in preparation for colder months. This means home invasions.
Social Wasp – Yellowjackets and Hornets
Yellowjacket and hornet populations are also growing and by mid-August a yellowjacket colony can number in the thousands.

Wildlife
By August, the young summer mammals are now “tweens” and accompanying their parents on food runs. Larger mammals such as raccoons and other wildlife remain a top call for pest services throughout August.
