What to Expect from Fall Pests in Bryan
The mild temperatures and the rain cause pests to look for shelter. One of the keys factors in the increase in biting flies is a drop or rise in pressure caused by approaching storms. Spiders, scorpions, mice and other ground dwelling pests begin to seek out shelter when the rains start. Squirrels and raccoons are more likely to explore roof tops and other areas around your home to find nesting places for the approaching winter. While, we are just entering fall, pests are on the move and looking for shelter, food, and dry quarters.
Types Of Pests In Fall

Beyond those mentioned in the opening paragraphs you can expect a host of insects, arachnids, snakes, scorpions, rodents and mammals.
Hemipterans – stink bugs, Box Elders, and Kissing Bugs are three common types of hemipterans. All will make their way into your home looking for a place to overwinter.
Paper Wasp – Not too uncommon to find them trying to build nests in cracks in your home’s siding, slipping under eaves, or finding their way into small holes in the soffit vents. They are drawn in by the warm air exchange and their tiny antenna are well-equipped to find warmth, water, and food.
Spiders – There are some 800 plus species of spiders in Texas and all of them would not mind spending the winter with you. The good news is that only a few of those are of medical concern. The rest might bite but will do little harm. Still, there is no reason to spend the winter with spiders.
Rodents – We often think of mice and rats when we say “rodents” but squirrels are also rodents and squirrels will gladly make a home in your attic, in your walls, or in your outbuildings. They are looking for a place to build a nest, have babies, and stay dry. Squirrels do a ton of damage to insulation, chewing wires, from their urine and scat, and they carry fleas.
Mammals – Raccoon, skunk and possums are three very common mammals but so are bats. Any of these animals will make their way under your home, into your attic, or some of the smaller ones may move into your walls.
Snakes – It is not unheard of too find a snake in a house. In past blogs we have discussed finding snakes in attics. When fall comes and the temperature drops, snakes need a place to overwinter where they can be undisturbed. Because they are cold-blooded they are slow to react in the winter. It is not uncommon to find them under tarps or planter in your garage or around your home. Those small spaces help them stay warm enough to survive and are often not touched during the colder months of the year.
