Fall Chores That Knock Down Pest Populations
One of the biggest challenges for many pests is finding shelter before the winter cold and storms move across Texas. Many pests find shelter in our homes and yards and gain a foothold on next year’s pest populations. Some pests, such as insects, may lay eggs that overwinter while the adults die. Getting rid of pests is an excellent way to keep pest populations low. Here are our tips and chores for knocking down pest populations this fall.
Keep the Leaf Litter Raked
Even with a foot of snow on top of it, a pile of leaves is a warm, cozy, little hideaway for insects or insect eggs. By keeping the leaf litter raked up, you remove the shielding effects from winter weather and make it harder for pests to find winter habitats. By keeping the yard clean, you remove the hiding place that mice, rats, and insects could use to shelter during the fall and winter months.
Inspect the Outside of the House
Several pests take advantage of small areas of a home that are damaged. Squirrels, bats, and birds will happily nest in the wall space or attic if they can gain access. The eave vents – soffit vents – help air to allow airflow to occur within the house. These little vents are barely noticeable unless you look for them. They are covered with screening to keep out pests, but the screening material can break down and become brittle over time. Another place bats, birds, and squirrels can get into wall space is through loose siding or trim boards. The entry does not have to be large for bats and birds, and squirrels will make a small hole larger by gnawing the wood.
