Noises In The Wall – Pest Control Bryan, Texas
September and November are the months in which we receive a lot of calls about noises in the wall space from homeowners. Something has moved in, and it is keeping people up at night. Generally, the “thing” is either a rodent, bird or a few bats. Regardless of what it is, it is a pest.
Birds in the Wall
Many species of birds migrate back to Texas and the Gulf Coast at the beginning of Fall. Because they are not resident birds, they must find a place to build a nest. Homes are one of the vacant spots, and with so many homes, migrating birds move right in. Generally, they find their way into attics and wall spaces through poorly maintained vent covers. Once in the wall or attic, they make noises that sound like scratching on the wood. That is just them coming and going. If they lay eggs, then you might also hear the fledglings crying for food.
Bats in the Wall
Bats are a common problem. Wall space is a perfect place for them to roost. There are also large colonies of bats that migrate back to Texas for the cold season. They also love attic space. There are several problems with bats. They roost in the same location over and over, which means that the guano and urine cause an amazing amount of damage to homes and businesses. Bats are also known to be capable of contracting rabies, which makes them a potential health risk.
To gain access to a home, bats need only a tiny space. They will enter through broken vent covers, chimneys, loose siding, or damaged wood. Bats are a very beneficial organism. They eat flying insects such as mosquitoes. Bats are also easy to remove from a home. You can attract bats to your yard by installing a bat box but do so only if your home is secure.
Rodents in the Wall
Rodents are a more common problem in wall spaces. Mice, rats, and squirrels will happily make a home in your home. Generally, you find mice at all levels of a house. Rats tend to like to come and go. Roof rats are very loud. They are active in the wee hours of the night, and they race back and forth, chasing each other and fighting.
Squirrels are perhaps one of the most destructive of all rodents. Ground squirrels can ruin a home in a very short period. Tree squirrels can damage roofing material and chew up wood to gain access to a wall or attic.
