When Are You Most Likely To See Snakes?
Snakes are cold-blooded creatures. The most likely time that you would encounter a snake is in the afternoon. Be wary of going in and out of homes where there is a patio that has sun. Snakes bask in warm places. In the past, several reports of snake bites occurring when people left their homes and stepped on a snake basking on the front porch.
What Can You Do to Deter Snakes From Entering Your Yard?
The most significant and most impactful way to keep snakes out of your yard is to keep the lawn mowed. Snakes can hide in tall grass and around untrimmed hedges or shrubs.
Two things drive snakes to hunt. The first is that they have cover from predators, such as raptors. The second is the presence of food, such as rodents. Rodents thrive in messy yards. Tall grasses also help mice and rats to hide from predators, and snakes will use that cover to hunt mice and seek out rodent dens.
Most snakes have a vast territory in which they hunt. Rattlesnakes, for example, may have a five-mile radius from their den site where they hunt. If your home and yard are within that radius, you may see snakes in your yard. Keeping your yard clear of tall weeds, clutter, and debris is one way to help reduce the number of snakes that may enter your yard.
