November and December Pest Outlook
The weather around Bryan, Texas, remains warm enough for hardy insects to remain active. However, even with cooler nights, many pests will do fine if they find shelter. So what does the November and December pest outlook look like? Let’s find out.
Indoor Pests
Rodents will continue to be a problem throughout the fall and winter months. Additional indoor pests include spiders, which are seeking a place to overwinter.
Spiders and Holidays
As you take down holiday decorations from the attic or the garage, be mindful of spiders. Holiday decorations sit undisturbed for much of the year, and that is an ideal situation for both black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders.
You often find black widows and brown recluse spiders in spots that go undisturbed for long periods. These are shy spiders who like to be left alone, which is slightly different from many other spiders who build webs or roam around places where there is more activity.
Rodents
Rodents, including mice and rats, may also be active this fall and winter. Kitchens, attics, garage space, outbuildings, and closets are prime locations for rodent activity. In addition, many of the mice and rats found in homes are looking for food, water, and nesting locations to raise litter after litter of young.
Be on the lookout for signs of rodents; Look for droppings, urine marking, and damage such as chewed items. Listen for their noises. You can hear them in the walls and subflooring, and attic spaces. Sometimes you can hear them squeaking.
Outdoor Pests
Wildlife remains a significant pest for November and December. The warmer fall weather means larger animals, such as Raccoons, will remain active for longer into the fall and potentially into December too. Generally, skunks, raccoons, and possums remain in their dens during winter. They do not hibernate. Instead, the females give birth and take care of their young. When the babies can travel, the females emerge and begin to hunt for food.
Mosquitoes and Flies
Mosquitoes are not off the map either. The warmer and wet weather makes it very possible for mosquitoes to thrive during November and possibly into December. Other fly species that may continue to be a pest outdoors include house flies.
Wasps
Expect wasps to be present during November and hunting for food. As the weather chills, the wasp populations should drop and remove wasps as a pest during the winter month. Much of when that happens depends on the weather and whether it remains warmer than usual. Warmer winter weather is not off the table either.
Overall, November and December remain active pest months. We expect to continue to have issues with rodents and wildlife. Both are expected to remain the two most significant pest issues this fall. Another pest that becomes more prevalent during the holiday months is the cockroach. You can expect them to continue to be an issue for much of the year.
