It’s Termite Swarming Season
Every spring, generally following a rain, termite colonies divide. The new queen leaves the colony taking with her a portion of the workers. They fly out and look for a new place to call home. That place might be your home. Here’s what to look for during the swarming season.
Swarming Insects
A swarm of termites is something to behold. The swarm can be large, and disorganized or it can be a tightly clustered group. If you notice a swarm, make a note of where they land. If it is near your home or outbuildings, give us a call. There are several types of termites, and not all are a threat to your house. Proper identification is the first step in preventing an infestation.
You See Wings on the Ground
Termites do not usually fly because they typically do not have wings. They grow wings when it is time to swarm. As soon as they find a suitable place to set up a colony, they land on the ground and shed their wings. Wings are usually to them once they tunnel into wood. All of those wings are a sign that termites have moved into your foundation or subflooring. Generally, you will find the discarded wings around the foundation area of your home or outbuildings, or on windowsills.
You Find Frass
Frass is termite poop. These are insects that eat wood, and their poop looks like sawdust or tiny pellets. This process happens once the termites begin to chew into the wooden sections of your foundation or subflooring.
Any of these three signs tell us that termites may infest your home. The sooner the process begins to remove, the more minor the damage they do.
