We deal with termites all year long, but March and April are the two months that homeowners need to be alert for new infestations of Termites.
In March and April, termites disperse or swarm. A new queen leaves the nest with a bunch of older workers. It is their job to find a new location for a colony and then build it. The reason we say that March and April are the two of the worst months in termite season is that these are the two months when most new termite infestations start. Generally, people don’t notice new termite infestations. It is not until a Wood Damaging Insect report is made when a home goes on the market, or when people begin to notice structural issues with the house.
How to Spot a New Termite Infestation
When termites swarm, they fly. It is only a short period that they have wings. After all, wings don’t do anything for termites after they establish a colony. You can look around the perimeter of your home for their discarded wings. You will see many of them in one location. Look for small gaps between the foundation and the house. In those areas, you may find discarded wings.
Look for Frass. Frass is termite poop. It is small round balls of chewed up wood. Where you find frass, you most likely find small holes in the wood.
