Pests That Live Under Your House
The underside of your home makes a beautiful place to overwinter. Many pests are well suited to living in the dark and dank world between the earth and the bottom of your home. Keep reading as we walk you through the list of pests that you might find under buildings.
The Termite
Perhaps the most well-known pest to love the underside of buildings is the termite. They are also one of the most destructive insects in the modern world. They not only live under your home but also eat it. You could say they love your home.
Carpenter Ants
Not overly common, but carpenter ants are happy to live under homes along the same destructive path as termites. A difference is that carpenter ants do not eat your home. They chew it up to make caves or galleries in wood beams where they live. The larger the colony becomes, the more galleries they need. That excavation of wood weakens the foundation supports of homes and businesses.
Snakes
Snakes are common under-house pests. Usually, they are not a problem unless they are one of the vipers, which pose a threat to humans and animals. Snake removal is common around homes and businesses and even under homes and outbuildings. Most species of snakes are harmless, though their bite may be painful. Texas has only five species of venomous snakes. Rattlesnakes are perhaps the most commonly encountered snake.
Wildlife
Larger mammals are a common under-house issue. Raccoons love the underside of buildings. The space is generally warm and dry and makes a perfect location for denning. Females may also overwinter and give birth to young. Outbuildings are commonplace for raccoons, but they may also decide that it is the perfect location for denning under your house.
Skunks may explore the underside of your home as they are one of the best insectivores around. They will hunt for insects, small reptiles and may even eat snakes if the opportunity presents itself. Skunks are highly beneficial except for their stinky defense.
Possums are another mammal that will den under a house. They generally are around looking for food, such as pet food. Like the skunk, possums are very beneficial. Their primary source of food is ticks. Possums get a bad rap. They look menacing and seem aggressive, but left alone; they do little damage.
Stray Animals are also another likely pest that can live under homes and buildings. Cats are most likely. The underside of homes and businesses are warm and mostly dry.
Wildlife under a home is not a good scene. Many animals, such as raccoons, are destructive. They can rip up ducting, tear down insulation, and chew wood and wires or disrupt plumbing.
