Ticks – Bryan and College Station
As we approach the fall season, ticks become more of a problem. Not only is the weather ideal for hiking, camping, and hunting, but the tick population seems to increase in fall. Ticks not only feed on blood, but they can also transmit diseases such as Lyme’s Disease. Another problem with ticks is that they can appear almost anywhere. So, even in the city, ticks can be a problem. If you have pets, you may find ticks embedded on your pets. If your kids play in your yard, they too may pick up a tick.
How to Reduce the Threat of Ticks
Generally, ticks crawl up on shrubs so that they can attach themselves to larger herbivores, such as deer. By keeping shrubs pruned back, you reduce the chance of accidentally encountering ticks in your yard. Ticks will also drop from low branches on trees and onto their target. Proper pruning helps prevent tick bites. Ticks will also use tall grass for perches, so keeping the lawn mowed is a good option too. If you work in your yard, the CDC recommends that you wear light-colored clothing so that you can spot ticks before they bite you.
Pets and Ticks
In terms of pets, it is also a good idea to talk with your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention programs. Ticks may ride into the house on pets and then find you.
